Discovery of the 4th type of Nematodes

A Research team headed by Dr. Majid Pedram, a faculty member of Plant Pathology Department, managed to discover and describe the fourth type of rare type of nematodes in Iran. Basilaphelenchus is among the rarest species and is considered a genetic deposit for the country.

Since the establishment of plant pathology in Iran, five types of nematodes have been discovered and described, the first case being discovered by the researchers of Tehran University in 1972 and the remaining four by Dr. Pedram's research team.

It has to be noted here that Basilaphelenchus was discovered in cooperation with a research team of Florida University and Forest Research Center of Iran whereas the other three species were the result of collaboration with researchers from Spanish Universities and British Parasitology Center.
